3 Simple Sabbath Steps

2 On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work.  Genesis 2:2 NLT

Unfortunately, I think “Sabbath” has been reduced to only an Old Testament word.  Sabbath literally means, “to cease.”  Genesis 2 gives us a picture of God resting, but also making His day of rest holy.  It was to be different.  Rather than creating, it was time to step back, observe and enjoy His creation.

In my position at Landmark church, I’m off on Mondays.  When Monday rolls around, I’m numb in the brain and a day of rest is needed and greatly appreciated.   Most of you don’t work in church world.  The idea of a day off probably leaves you rolling on the floor laughing.  However, if you and I don’t get serious about time for rest in our schedules there are mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health issues that will arise.

Next week, I’m taking some vacation time.  It’s very rare for me, and honestly very difficult, but I plan to spend time at a friend’s cabin.  I’m heading there with a Bible, journal, maybe a book or two and lots of notecards with a plan to spend time praying, seeking and listening to God.

Here are three goals for my retreat that may help you in your Sabbath breaks.  It’s just like crossing the street.

Look – What do you see in your life?  Where do you struggle?  Is this due to spiritual need?  What is the source of stress in your relationships and how can God save?  It’s not all bad news.  Make a list of 5 people that have encouraged you in the last month.  Make a list of your favorite flavors or smells.  Stop and thank God.  Look at the good and bad in your life.  See where God is at work or where you need Him to work.  And of course if you’re somewhere surrounded by natural beauty…stop and enjoy.

Listen – What does God want you to hear?  What do you hear from Scripture?  What recurring wisdom keeps arising from people that love you most?  Do you need clarity, direction or comfort?  Be quiet.  Let God speak.

Move – Based on what you see and hear, what are you doing?  Do you have a dream?  Are there steps you need to take towards repentance or reconciliation?  Are there dreams and you need to get out of the boat and walk in faith towards God?  Be ready to move towards something greater that God has for you.

These are my goals.  Even if I walk away without answers, I won’t be empty handed.  Time with God is greater than answers.

Questions for you…

  • Do you have regular time where you are able to shut down and recharge?
  • If you had an opportunity for a personal retreat, what would you do?
  • Do you need guidance or clarity?  Share if you’d like, and let’s pray for each other.

It’s mid-week.  I hope you’re finding down time this week.

I’ve been reflecting on this very concept lately only from a different perspective. I have lots of noise in my life. Distractions. They aren’t bad but they aren’t good either. Just time wasters. Although a quiet retreat by myself isn’t in my near future, I’m considering a retreat from everything complicated, distracting, and wasteful. Not sure where I’ll start…still contemplating. We all have the same amount of time so I am carefully evaluating just what I’m doing with mine…thanks for sharing!

I hope you get some clarity and focus on your Facebook fast. I know it will be a blessing in some way.
