Theology of Creativity Part 1

God is love – 1 John 4:8
God is light – 1 John 1:5
God is faithful – 1 Corinthians 10:13
God is true – John 3:33
God is holy – Psalm 99:9
God is righteous – Daniel 9:14

We could go on and on describing the character and attributes of God.  I would guess we focus on holiness, light and love as the top of His attributes in our conversations.   But in all these things, we are first introduced to God in an entirely different way.

1In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.  Genesis 1:1 (ESV)

The first act of God in Scripture and human human history was that of Creator.  He brought ideas to life.  Where there was nothing, He spoke and the world we know began to form, blossom and grow.  Silence became the sound of wind and rustling leaves, animals crying out, thunder clapping and waves crashing.  Darkness gave way to colors set in rainbows, sunsets and the feathers of a peacock.

Genesis 1:1 is far more than the first step in a process.  It’s an introduction to the person and personality of God as Creator.  As mankind strives to create pieces of beauty, God created our souls to recognize, identify and savor beauty.  When we take steps to create, we are not only bringing ideas to life and into view, but we are God’s creation, fully alive;  reflecting and mimicking our Creator.   When we create, we worship.  We reflect the One who formed us.  We honor beauty and intelligence He has created.  We express it further and from a point of view that is smaller, yet from our personal point of view.

Remember, creativity is not only art.  Creativity is a mental act that brings ideas out of nothingness and makes something greater than nothingness could ever be.  Creativity brings brings symphonies from silence along with strategies and solutions from boardrooms.  Any time an idea comes to life, remember these moments display God-like character formed in us.

A friend once said humans are most like God when a husband and wife conceive and bring forth life.  I agree, but go further to say we are most like God any time we bring life to something which did not exist before.  Creativity reflects the image of God in all of His creatures.

I challenge you to reflect on the ideas you consider to be most creative.  Ask yourself these questions…

  • How is God honored in these ideas or works?
  • How is creativity a reflection of God’s presence in the life of all creatures?
  • How can I use creativity to honor God in my life?

Much more to discuss on this, so stay tuned.
