What do you do when you encounter “scary” people.
I’m talking about the kinds of people that look, talk, and behave in very different ways than you do. I think we find people scary not because of what they could to do us, but because we are afraid of what we must do to interact with them. On the other side of the borders of our comfort zones, lies some very scary territory.
I saw this video the other day and was challenged. How would you respond if you were in a similar situation?
- What do you think of the reactions in this video?
- How would you behave in similarly or differently?

I understand why the couples who left reacted the way they did. They saw the bikers tattoos, hair styles, shirts, and muscles and those just scream “I’m going to hurt you if you touch me or look at me” and they could very well do that. It could also be that those couples who left didn’t want to be that close to anyone else like the people who sit a chair away from everyone else so everyone in the theater is separated by a chair on either side, but I think they were just initmidated by the amount of bikers and didn’t want to get hurt if something happened.
I think I’d probably sit in an empty chair. I almost left a class one time because of the room in which the class was held was almost full. I walked out because I didn’t want to be around that many people, but I really wanted to sit in on that class. I eventually walked back in and had a great time listening to the teacher about the topic.
Seeing that video reminded me of when I used to hang out with the goths at the mall and people would avoid the goths because of what they were wearing or judge them as thieves for their big pockets or say they are bad people because of how they dress. They were my only friends in high school and they were fun to hang out with.
This is hilarious, b/c I can see myself pulling a Chandler Bing….grabbing at the back of shirt and yelling, “Oh no! This parachute is only a backpack!” Then running out of the room. In my defense, though, I have social anxiety disorder, and would probably do it even if it was a room slap full of normal lookiing people.
